Post 21 - Weekly Slant 26/6/2015
Hello! And welcome to my corner.
Last week marked the end of every teams minicamp, meaning we are getting much closer to football. Though it does also signal the start of a long wait for training camp.
This week wasn't nearly as busy as last week in terms of big news, nevertheless, here's a run down of a few of the biggest stories.
Tom Brady's Appeal Begins
Yesterday, Tom Brady's appeal hearing for his role in Deflate-Gate took place and it was a long one. The appeal was meant to last no longer than 4 hours. It lasted 10. Now we wait, Roger Goodell, though no time frame for his verdict has been given, is expected to announce his decision on Tom Brady's suspension at around the same time as training camp starts.
As far as the Patriots are concerned, that time frame is okay. Any later would obviously start to cause problems as they need to know whether Jimmy Garappolo will in fact be the starting quarterback for a month.
Does Odell Beckham Jr. Need to grow up?
The sudden and rapid rise of Odell Beckham Jr. has garnered OBJ with a hell of a lot of attention. From winning the Madden 16 cover vote to being the Giants' player in Sunday Night Football's intro, OBJ has constantly been in the public's face. Though for the first time, he seems to be tired of the attention, especially the attention he gets from teammates.
The Giants have held Beckham out of training camp with a non-serious hamstring injury, and rightfully so. Hamstring injuries are notorious for reappearing, so it was a good move by the Giants to prevent any serious harm to one of the teams best players. However, his lack of involvement has caused teammates to lay into him a little with remarks like, "Oh, you're too big time now [to train]?" leaving Beckham feeling a little bothered.
I get that it would be tough. Having to stand around watching other people do what you love, taking your reps, but not being able to join in does suck. Add in constant remarks from "everyone" and it would be really tough. Ultimately though, I do think he needs to grow up a little and learn that he has to accept the good and bad parts of fame.
Jerry Richardson Shows His Heart
On a non-football note, the shocking run of deaths in America linked to racism continued with the death of nine people in a racially charged attack on the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Earlier this month we saw Jerry Richardson splash his cash by re-signing Cam Newton to a huge extension worth over $100 million.

However, following the attack on the church, Richardson used his cash in an even better way. He donated $10,000 to each of the 9 affected families and another $10,000 to the AME Church. I take my hat off to Richardson for doing what he can to support those effected by this horrible crime.
