NFL Week 5 observations

Week 5 of the NFL provided a lot of drama, including the first head coach firing of the season. The 0-5 Washington Redskins, rightfully, parted ways with Jay Gruden after five disappointing years in the role. It also left teams asking many questions about where they are and left fans, analysts and experts alike questioning the officiating of the game. Here are my Week 5 observations. Parity is sky high If it wasn’t already obvious, Sunday Night Football only proved the level of parity in the NFL right now. On a weekly basis I wouldn’t be surprised if any team lost to virtually any opponent – save the Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets. Even the New England Patriots look vulnerable, they just have a defense that is currently on pace to be the unquestioned greatest of all time. For example, if you’d watched the Houston Texans this week you wouldn’t believe the Carolina Panthers had beaten them 16-10 in Houston last week, or that...

NFL Week 4 observations

Week 4 of the NFL season is one game away from its end, meaning 28 teams are now through the first quarter of their season. By this point all the rust should have been knocked off and we can start to get some real takeaways from each team. With that being the case, what were my main observations from this weekend’s action? The Buffalo Bills are a legitimate playoff contender I’d be lying if I said I expected to be saying this, but Sunday’s loss to the Patriots showed how talented most of this team is. It may not have been Brady and Co.’s finest day, but that’s in large part thanks to a very stout Bills defense. This defense is playing very good, sound football on all three levels and gave the Patriots’ offense all sorts of problems. In fact, take away a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and the Bills would have won this game, thanks to the defense. The issue for the Bills is their offense. Yes, they were playing the best defense in the NFL, but Josh Allen still h...

NFL Week 3 observations

There’s just one game left in Week 3 of the NFL, so with 15 games behind us it’s time for my main observations from the weekend’s action. Let’s get right into it. Kyle Allen may be better for the Panthers, right now, than Cam Newton Hear me out on this one. I’m not saying Kyle Allen is a better QB or player than Cam Newton, there is not nearly enough evidence to go that far. However, Allen has now started two games and had meaningful action in a third, and it is hard not to like what we have seen. Today especially, he displayed the ar m talent that made him such a high recruit out of high school and made him start ahead of Kyler Murray at Texas A&M. He showed he was capable of running the Panthers' offense comfortably and successfully. In his two starts the Panthers have scored 68 points and he is 35/54 (64.8%) for 489 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. He's also added a rushing touchdown. Admittedly he hasn’t faced the toughest opposition, but what...

NFL Week 2 observations

The NFL season is back and in full swing – thank god – and with it it’s time to get cracking with more content. As always there is plenty to talk about each week, or even each day – I’m looking at you, AB – so I’m going to be breaking down my main observations from each week of NFL action. 1. Lamar Jackson may just be it: Of course, there is no shortage of people who are willing to accept this, as they’ll be claiming they said this from the moment he was drafted, or even earlier. I have to admit I was skeptical right up to the start of this season. Though it’s important to consider the level of competition he has faced so far this season, the tape doesn’t lie. Jackson is thriving right now and clearly made huge strides this offseason. Against the Dolphins he did exactly what he had to almost every time of asking, and this weekend against the Cardinals he, by and large, did the same, especially when the Ravens needed it most. He seems to have great chemistry with Marquise B...
