XFL player draft: Quarterbacks

The XFL has announced its player pool ahead of its inaugural season starting in February. The XFL player draft will start on Tuesday October 15 and wrap up the following day.

So who are these players? You can find them all listed by position here on Cabache’s Corner.

Quarterback. The most important position on the team. A team’s success, or lack thereof, can often be attributed to its quarterback. Seeing as the XFL is trying to reboot itself and capture all football fans’ attention in the expanse of the NFL season, the QB play is going to have to be pretty good to really pull in lots of fans.


Be that how it should be or not, it’s the truth. So who are the QBs that will be vying for the starting spot for each of the eight XFL franchises?

The players are listed in alphabetical order, on order of the days they were announced – Day one players come first, then day two players are listed alphabetically and so on.

Drew Anderson, Murray State

Anderson went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft but signed with the Arizona Cardinals for the preseason.

Eric Dungey, Syracuse

Dungey went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft but signed with New York Giants but was released before training camp.

Justin Holman, UCF

Holman graduated UCF in 2016 and joined the Jacksonville Jaguars for 2012 minicamp.

Matt Linehan, Idaho

Linehan, son of NFL Coach Scott Linehan, has never been on an NFL roster but most recently played for the Salt Lake Stallions in the AAF.

Greg McGhee, Howard

Howard was undrafted in 2015 but has played in the CFL, Indoor Football league and Arena Football League for a number of teams.

Zach Mettenberger, LSU

Mettenberger was Odell Beckham Jr.’s and Jarvis Landry’s QB at LSU. The Tennessee Titans selected him in the sixth round, 178th overall, in the 2014 NFL Draft and he started ten games over two years. He has also spent time on the San Diego Chargers’ and Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster. He started four games for the AAF’s Memphis Express before getting injured.

Keith Price, Washington

Price went undrafted in 2014 and spent the offseason with the Seattle Seahawks. He has since played in the CFL and AAF with multiple teams.

Vincent Testerverde Jr., Albany

Testerverde Jr. went undrafted in 2019 but spent spells of the offseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Austin Allen, Arkansas

Allen went undrafted in 2018 but spent the offseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also spent time with the Memphis Express and Salt Lake Stallions of the AAF.

Joe Callahan, Wesley

Callahan went undrafted in 2016 and has spent time with the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Ravens after signing with the Packers initially. He has thrown seven passes in the NFL.

CJ Collins, SW Assembly of God

Collins went undrafted in 2019 and had a tryout with the Green Bay Packers.

Connor Cook, Michigan State

Cook was a 4th round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2016. He holds the record for most wins as a starter at Michigan State. His one start in the NFL was an ugly playoff loss to the Houston Texans. Since being cut by the Raiders he has spent time with, but never appeared for, the Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions.

David Cornwell, East Central (OK)

Cornwell had a rocky college career and finished with Division II East Central. This will be his first football after playing in the XFL’s Summer Showcase.

Jake Heaps, Kansas

Heaps was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Jets in 2015. He has since been signed by the Seattle Seahawks for the offseason as well as spending time in the CFL and Fall Experimental League.

Vad Lee, James Madison

Lee went undrafted in 2016 and has only been signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL and Columbus Lions of the National Arena League.

Marcus McDade, Sacramento State

McDade has played for the Frankfurt Universe and Birmingham Iron.

Darron Thomas, Oregon

Thomas led the Oregon Ducks to the 2011 BCS National Championship but has never been signed to an NFL roster. He has bounced around the CFL and several other leagues.

Kevin Anderson, Fordham                

Anderson only post-college experience came with the Orlando Apollos of the AAF.

Austin Appleby, Florida

Appleby signed as an undrafted free agent to the Dallas Cowboys in 2017 but never made the roster. He also played for the Orlando Apollos of the AAF.

Taylor Cornelius, Oklahoma State

Cornelius was a one-year starter at Oklahoma State and tried out for the Green Bay Packers in 2019.

BJ Daniels, South Florida

Daniels was a 7th round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2013 but spent the season on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad, technically winning a Super Bowl. He has since been signed by the Houston Texans, New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Salt Lake Stallions as a QB, WR and RB.

Garrett Fugate, Central Missouri State

Fugate got some buzz in NFL circles around the 2017 draft, but never signed with a team. His only professional experience has come with the Montreal Alouettes.

Devante Kincade, Grambling State

After a very successful two years at Grambling State, Kincade has struggled in professional football, with his only experience being with the Maine Mammoths of the National Arena League and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL.

Marcus McMaryion, Fresno State

McMaryion went undrafted in 2019 and worked out with the Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints but was never signed.

Philip Nelson, East Carolina

Nelson went undrafted in 2017 and has since played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL and the San Diego Fleet in the AAF.

Peter Pujals, Holy Cross

Pujals went undrafted in 2018 and only played in some of the Minnesota Vikings fourth preseason game before being cut.

Patrick Towles, Boston College

Towles went undrafted in 2017 and had tryouts with the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals. In 2018 he reportedly quit football to become a missionary, but now finds himself back at football.

Tyree Jackson, Buffalo

Jackson went undrafted in 2019 NFL Draft, which was surprising given the buzz around him as the draft approached, but he signed with the Buffalo Bills. He was cut during final roster cuts.

Tanner Lee, Nebraska

Lee was a 6th round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2018 NFL Draft but spent much of that year on the practice squad and never saw the field. He was waived in August 2019 before final roster cuts.

Tanner Mangum, BYU

Mangum wasn’t drafted in 2019 and hasn’t signed any professional contracts prior to the XFL.

Jalan McClendon, Baylor

McClendon was undrafted in 2019 and spent some time with the Baltimore Ravens then Washington Redskins, but was not signed to a practice squad.

Alejandro Bennifield, Chattanooga

Bennifield was undrafted in 2017 and signed with the New Orleans Saints for training camp. He has since played for the Memphis Express of the AAF and the Massachusetts Pirates of the National Arena League.

KJ Carta-Samuels, Colorado State

Carta-Samuels had a disappointing college career but was fairly productive in his final year. He has yet to sign an NFL contract of any kind.

Trevor Knight, Texas A&M

Knight is mostly famous for beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl while he was at Oklahoma. He was very good for A&M after his transfer, and looked fairly promising in preseason action with the Arizona Cardinals. He was a high pick in the AAF draft but was eventually the backup for the Arizona Hotshots.

Brogan Roback, Eastern Michigan

Hard Knocks star. That is Roback’s claim to fame. Roback had a solid college career before making a name for himself on Hard Knocks with the Cleveland Browns. He has never made an NFL roster or practice squad.

Marquise Williams, North Carolina

Williams was a two-year starter at North Carolina and produced well in both years. The dual-threat QB went undrafted in 2016 and spent the preseason with the Packers before being a final roster cut. Since he has never been a starter, playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and San Antonio Commanders.
