Post 23 - The East Kent Mavericks win another nail-biter to remain undefeated

Hello! And welcome to my corner.

The East Kent Mavericks overcame the Essex Spartans 19-12 to keep their undefeated record and leave them in total control of their playoff position.

The East Kent Mavericks travelled to Hannakins Farm on Sunday 2nd August to take on the Essex Spartans in a game that would go a long way to deciding the South 2 divisions playoff picture.

The Mavericks won the toss and chose to receive, looking to make a faster start than in all of their previous games. And they did just that. They marched down the field, culminating in a 10-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Harvey Weatherill. After a blocked PAT the Mavericks led 6-0.

However, despite the strong start by the Mavericks offence, penalties began to kill their momentum. Combining these penalties with sound defence and good tackling by the Spartans, the Mavericks were shutout for the rest of the 1st half.

Unfortunately, the penalties weren’t exclusive to offence. On one Spartans drive, the Mavericks committed multiple penalties, giving free yards to the Spartans and eventually putting them on the 2-yard line and in a very good position to tie the game up, and they did just that. The defence did block the PAT to prevent the Spartans taking a 1-point lead, leaving the score at 6-6 going into halftime.

The second half however, saw the Mavericks take command. On one of the Spartans first plays of the second half the Mavericks defence recovered a fumble snap and took possession on the Spartans 45 yard line.

The offence also regained their form. They needed just one play after the fumble to find the end zone, a 45-yard run by Remy Cabache, and re-take the lead. Though another missed PAT left the score at 12-6 but all the momentum with the Mavericks.

On the ensuing Spartans possession the Mavericks defence once again came up big, with another fumble recovery, giving the ball straight back to the offence. The offence once again capitalised on the opportunity with another rushing touchdown for Harvey Weatherill and a successful PAT attempt, making it a 19-6 game.

Despite another Spartans score in the 3rd quarter, making it 19-12, the Mavericks defence held the Spartans to very few yards and the offence managed to run out large chunks of the clock with a powerful running game.

The Mavericks victory gives them a 4-0-1 record and needing to beat the Buckinghamshire Wolves to secure the Juniors team their first ever playoff appearance.
